Summer is HERE!

Dear All!

Hope the exams went well for everyone and that you've all been enjoying your liberated state of being!

Am sure everyone has their plans for the summer and that's great! If you're travelling, have a wonderful trip. If you're chilling on here, enjoy your selves. If you're heading home, sit back and relax! Whatever it is, we'll see you in again in September!

I got an email yesterday (which I thought I'd share with you) from a gay Malaysian who was telling me about the sexuality movement in Malaysia (Seksualiti Merdeka: translates as Liberate Sexuality) and the country will be having it's second pride march this year, together with street parties and family-oriented activities. I was very impressed, having grown up in Malaysia, to hear of these forward approaches in bringing the GBLT community into the wider society of the country (which is generally regarded as highly religious and conservative). Anyway, thought I'd share that with you.

Have a great summer and we'll touch-base soon!

We'll be posting events and shoutouts as they come along.

  1. Hey, I am the organiser of Seksualiti Merdeka (the word Merdeka translates more accurately to Independence, and is the same word we use for Independence Day). Anyhow, I just wanted to clarify some things. This is not a LGBT pride event. It is a sexuality rights festival, and in a strategic move to integrate all the sexualities together, we decided to look after everyone's sexuality rights, including straight's. In Malaysia, everyone's sexuality rights are not being recognised, so if we can show how this affects everyone, we might actually stand a chance at building a community of activists who look out for each other regardless of sexuality. And lastly, it is not a march and there are no street parties. As you mentioned, we are living in a religious and conservative country. This is only our second year organising this. So we don't wanna ruin it. We are keeping our aims modest: to affirm sexuality rights as a human right, to empower individuals and communities, and to create platforms for sexuality rights advocacy. To that end, we are having all indoor events, forums, theatre, concerts, workshops, talks, etc. The details of the events can be accessed here: http://annexegallery.com/index.php?option=com_eventlist&view=details&id=108:seksualiti-merdeka-2009-our-bodies-our-rights&Itemid=28
